THE single worst hotel experience I've had in at least a decade, possibly ever - and I have traveled all over Europe, Asia, and North America. From the moment we stepped into the hotel to check in, the owner was rude and off-putting. Apparently there had been a minor issue with the reservation (via Booking.com) and it only reflected 1x child, not two. Ultimately this was a moot point as I had reserved 2 rooms anyway, including the bunk bed room. So, ultimately, it should have been very easily resolved with the owner. However, he rudely and repeatedly made it an issue, despite the fact that I had reserved the two rooms for 13 nights due to our home being flooded during the torrential flooding in Belgium. Also, due to being displaced from our flooded home and having to change hotels frequently, a fraud alert had been placed on my credit card unknowingly to me. I resolved this BEFORE I checked in to Hotel de Luxembourg and the owner had already SUCCESSFULLY charged my credit card - again making this minor inconvenience a moot point. Well, the owner repeatedly - for days - made it a problem, despite confirming several times that the bill had indeed been paid. Due to my employer and insurance company wanting to move my family to a different hotel (due to the poor quality of the rooms here, the rude owner, and its distance from my work), I asked the owner - with at least 2 days' notice - if he would be willing to refund the unused nights to my card. This is when the bad experience got worse... The owner began to tell multiple lies to me, my wife, and my 2 young children. He assured us that if Booking.com would refund the commission he was charged for those unused nights, he would certainly refund us. I called Booking.com and confirmed that they would do that very thing. Booking.com also called the owner and told him the same thing. Later that day, the owner rudely "summoned" me to the dining area as if I were his child where claimed to have spoken to the police about me and found "2 people" who say I am "a bad person". This, of course, was false (and laughable). I am in Belgium under diplomatic status, and I am very well aware of my profile in this regard. He tried to show me an email from a rental car company that said a credit card hadn't worked. Unfortunately for the owner, the email was not about me as neither my name nor my credit card were anywhere on the email. Additionally, I have never used my Mastercard with that rental car company before. The lies continued.... The owner said that he didn't trust the Booking.com agent who called him because their call center is in Singapore. He also claimed that all of this was Booking.com's fault and that it wasn't up to him to reimburse me - again, more lies that had already been disputed and proven false by Booking.com. As I checked out of the hotel, the owner seemingly wanted to make things right with me, and he said he would refund me in a week or two. When a 2nd Booking.com agent called the owner, the owner pretended he couldn't speak any English, despite 99% of our conversations being in English. As a final show of unprofessionalism, the owner refused to provide his name, despite multiple requests. Well, unfortunately, the owner just responded to me that he refuses to refund the unused nights - despite being fully aware that our family home was damaged during the flooding and is uninhabitable, and in direct contrast with his previous assurances to me. Everything circled in this picture is listed on their Booking.com site but is either a gross misrepresentation or completely false. The ONLY redeeming quality of this hotel is the kind and lovely lady who runs the breakfast. She is a darling, sweet woman who was very kind to us. Sadly, the owner was the exact opposite for the entire time we stayed there. I will NEVER stay here again, and I will advise everyone I know to not stay here as well. It really is unfortunate that the owner chose to act this way.
