Do you know the Walser people? "People of the Alps" is the name commonly used to refer to the Walser. A people of shepherds, mountain herders, woodcutters, and farmers. Accustomed to struggling against the harsh seasons and the poverty of the land, the Walser have become attuned to the often hostile environment, developing, over the centuries, strategies that allow them to survive. A simple, essential life, where nothing is left to chance or waste. They establish villages where only mountain pastures exist, grow rye where the climate does not permit other crops, build houses suited to the harshness of high-altitude winters and avalanches, and for warmth, they burn manure in soapstone ovens where wood is scarce. They bake rye bread once a year in the village communal ovens and consume it sparingly. In short, an exceptional people. The network of trails traveled by the Walser has created a route of approximately eight hundred kilometers divided into 34 stages with 15 possible variations. Known as the "Great Walser Trail," it crosses four countries: Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, and Austria. My wife and I are currently hiking some of them. This one starts in Alagna and runs through the fabulous Otro Valley, reaching the last mountain pasture in Weng with a 450-meter elevation gain in about an hour and a quarter.
