Informal Camping Fort Augustus

Stretch of grass right next to the canal facilities. Should be big enough for at least 6 tents. The ground is quite flat, reasonably soft and doesn't have the plethora of stones of other places. Next to the bins there's a canoe rack. Facilities were unfortunately partly out of order but at least 1 toilet and 1 shower was working. Also there's a washing machine and a dryer. There's a drinking water tap in there. The facilities can get quite busy with all the people from the boats anchoring there. Facilities are wheelchair accessible and have extra accessible toilets and shower (if not out of order). The official canoe jetty is on the other side of the canal, but the boat jetty is low enough, too. The lock business starts up around 0800.

A lovely informal camping spot. Nice facilities if you have the Scottish canals facility key. Lovely views of the lock gates. Perfect for boater like ourselves who have been canoeing all day. It was really difficult to find and then I read another review and found it easily- thank you Valerie I’m not sure what we would have done without your photo and description.

The sign at the canoe pontoon says camping is not permitted in this area at all and we couldn't see any obvious spots for informal camping away from the canal so opted to stay with family in a holiday cottage in Fort Augustus for the evening, otherwise we would have carried on and found somewhere on Loch Ness. Very misleading that there is an informal camping spot marked on google. If you do stop somewhere here be aware it is very touristy with pubs and houses on the loch so lots of people around.
