The Old Coach House

Excellent all round. Jackie was very friendly and knowledgeable on the area. Our room was perfect. Breakfast was superb. Nice garden area to sit in premier shop just opposite, with a pizza van on a Fri evening. Would highly recommend.

We stayed at the Old Coach House a few weeks ago and had an absolutely wonderful time. The rooms were lovely, spotless and very cozy. Breakfast had plenty of options, all the ones we tried were delicious and home cooked. Jackie was a marvellous host, always making sure we had everything we needed and was always happy to help and made us feel right at home. The location is brilliant, makes a great base for exploring the area, and right by the Napoleon Inn, which was lively and had lots of music and events on. Definitely hoping to come back next year!

Through Booking.com I booked a one-night stay in April ‘26 at The Old Coach House as part of a coastpath walk; the booking was confirmed on the site. The next day, the guesthouse owner messaged me through Booking, saying ‘Unfortunately I am completely closed at that time, as we are away. … Could you kindly cancel your booking with us.’ Closed at Easter and the start of the season? Surely not? I duly cancelled, but now see it’s possible to book for April, but only for stays of two nights or more. It seems that, rather than accept the mistake of their accepting a one-night booking and honour the reservation (for which I would have been paying a premium for a one-night versus two-night stay, plenty to cover the cost of making up the room), the owner was prepared to lie. I believe that owners’ contracts with Booking require them to honour bookings other than in exceptional circumstances (relating to, e.g., non-payment), so this was nasty, slippery, manipulative behaviour. Not a good look for somewhere in ‘hospitality’.
