I really like this hotel, and would suggest it to anyone visiting from overseas as a good example of how things used to be done. The building is older and has all the quirkiness that comes with that. The room I had was reasonably spacious and well appointed, very clean, nothing to really pick fault with. The common areas downstairs are traditionally decorated, well maintained, and display the history of the location well. They are warm and inviting. The real thing about this hotel is that the service element is still there, from reception, to the bar and into the restaurant. Staff are plentiful and attentive, and it all adds up to a very civilised experience. I ate in the restaurant and the food was good, with a decent wine list. The room price is reasonable and the restaurant price is possibly at the high end, but the quality is there and the service and overall vibe made it worthwhile for me. It's all a little posh, but in no way stuck up.

Went today for festive afternoon tea. We were sat in huge chairs making it difficult to eat. We were completely ignored, though other guests were asked if they needed anything. Had to grab their attention with some staff walking off ignoring you, to get a drink of water. We had to ask twice for a box to take remaining things home. Other guests had hot water and sugar with their tea and were asked again if wanted more, we had no hot water or sugar and again not asked if wanted anything. Food was plentiful and was okay. Had to go ask for our coats and the bill. When I paid I mentioned we were ignored and he said they were extremely busy, this was a cop out as the other guests were attended too. It was a shame as I wanted to make it a good memory/experience with my daughter. Service not worth the money paid for it. To not go into the restaurant was unexpected.

My husband and I have just returned from a two day stay at The Imperial Hotel Barnstaple. We retired to Devon 18 years ago and it was our first visit to Barnstable what a lovely town centre. Great to see beautiful shops and bars what a vibrant place. The icing on the cake was the hotel Imperial alongside the river and a few steps away from the town centre. What a gem this hotel is from the time we stepped inside we were looked after so well. Greeted by pleasant helpful and professional staff. The hotel decor was excellent beautifully decorated and welcoming. The Christmas decorations were gorgeous. We only booked a small room as this was our first (definitely not our last)visit. We were given an upgrade thank you for that. Room was perfect obviously decor was thought about carefully down to simple positioning of mirrors etc. We didn’t eat in the restaurant this time but did have an evening drink in the bar which was a perfect cosy welcoming room. The ambiance of the whole hotel and friendly staff was exceptional. We look forward to our next stay hopefully for a longer visit. Definitely recommend this hotel if you like old school courtesy and decor beautifully done. Thank you to you all. Regards Jude and Jeff Cooper
