The building in question, built in the late 18th century and then known as the "Palazzo dei Templari," was the headquarters of the Imperial Royal Academy of the Habsburg Navy, where cadets studied to become officers. The four caryatids that can be seen today were originally a much-loved decorative element of one of Trieste's most popular theaters, the "Armonia." Built in 1857, this theater was located in what is now Piazza Goldoni, formerly Piazza della Legna, right on the corner of Via Carducci, then known as Via del Torrente because of the small river that flowed (and still flows) beneath it. After its demolition, the caryatids were moved in 1912 and placed on the ground floor of the current "Casa delle Cariatidi" to support the long balcony and frame a currently (as of 2026) closed residence and a sandwich shop. The term "caryatids" comes from Ancient Greek and refers to the stone statues depicting young women who supported the terraces of the Acropolis of Athens on their shoulders. The "House of the Caryatids" recently underwent extensive restoration, upgrading the building but not the four statues.
