Lickisto Blackhouse Camping

A curate's egg of a camp site. On the positive side the location is wonderful and would justify the very high price IF the normal services that one would expect of a campsite were met. The site slopes down to a serene loch and has campervan pitches for 3 smallish vans, a yurt, a communal "black house", 10s of small tent pitches and a washer and dryer. All good so far and the high winds that we experienced did help to reduce the midges which love such sheltered treey locations. In addition the owners are friendly though not effusive, pleasantly perfunctory rather than actually informative. However, the entire site has just 3 unisex toilets. Actually we only found 2 and the welcome was uninformative in terms of facilities and layout. In addition there are 3 unisex showers. On a busy site in the summer you can only imagine the queues, rattled doors and wasted toilet trips. In addition the black house style is low, that includes the unhighlighted low door lintels that everyone must bang their head on at least once before sense is knocked in. Water is from a low pressure hosepipe and there are no grey water points. This all makes for somewhat stressful services and toilet situation, not what one might expect of a very expensive site. In short, from a marketing perspective, this is a visit just once experience, there is probably no expectation of a return visit. Unless significant sanitary investment is made and posted then I, sadly, wouldn't consider returning.

We had the best time at Lickisto. Such a distinctive and beautiful place, we immediately loved the vibe. As long distance cycle tourers the communal space provided by the blackhouse was a real bonus and Lickisto seemed to attract all the best humans. We had many great chats and laughs with other visitors. Grieg and Adrian were excellent at hosting and providing for our needs (thank you!). We left feeling refreshed and invigorated.
