This is a lovely, cosy, charming and welcoming pub/hotel in a prime location right in the harbour - with a strong sense of history too which they have thankfully retained while adding modern touches. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, the vibe was very relaxed and the food was delicious! We had the Sunday roast on our first evening - it was a very generous portion and great quality too. The second evening we really enjoyed the fish & chip supper - so fresh and tasty. Our room was warm and comfortable with a view of the harbour, which was delightful. We did a great deal of walking the coast path when we stayed, and it was a joy to then come back to this lovely hotel for a welcome drink and a good meal. We highly recommend The Rising Sun.

Fabulous seafront location in a very pretty part of Devon. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast very good and has a great selection, we ate in the restaurant on both nights of our stay and again very good, the food was beautifully presented and the menu had a good and varied choice. We will definitely return. Only small gripes, the stairs to the rooms are very steep and narrow - if you had reduced mobility they may cause a problem. We travelled with our 2 dogs and felt the £15 charge per dog per night was a tad excessive.

Went for lunch as it was recommended last year by a different restaurant. We placed our order for food and 10 minutes later was told that the meat delivery van had broken down, but the owner was going to get fresh meat and we had the choice to either order something else or wait for the burgers. As we weren’t in any rush we decided to wait. When the burgers were served they looked grey in colour as if they hadn’t been seared properly. Anyway, as three of us had ordered these we proceeded to eat. Very quickly it was apparent that the burgers were completely over powered by the amount of pepper that had been put on the burgers. Having decided this was ridiculous, one of us left his meal. The others ate theirs while washing it down with a drink to get rid of the taste. We didn’t complain, ask for our money back however when the plates were collected it was mentioned that the pepper completely over powered the taste. The gentleman who served us took the plates to the kitchen and from where I was sitting saw that he raised this with the chef. The look of disgust on the chefs face, followed by what I can only presume to be everything is seasoned was shocking. As a chef learn to accept feedback, realise that not everyone eating a burger you have prepared wants an excessive amount or pepper, it wasn’t seasoning it ridiculous! Since returning home and this is the only thing we have eaten, two out of the three people have bad stomachs. Won’t be returning for sure.
